I'm not a big 'theme day' kinda person, but today we had one. Our theme was safety-mostly traffic safety. We had a lot of fun!
Here's a quick look at some of our activities.
We practiced our skip counting using printables from City Teacher Goes Country. Thank you Deb @ Living Montessori now for the printable tip! Charger's Lego Policeman helped us as we counted by jumping from number to number :).
The kids also made up their own game.
I got these great printables for free from 123 Homeschool 4 Me. The idea was to cut them out and paste them on the right shape...but I had other ideas. :)
These are the pages that were supposed to be glued, we just read them and sorted shapes instead.
I found this address printable on Homeschool Share. We did a *little* copy work. Mustang and Charger did this, the little girls did not.
This handy printable from I Can Teach My Child {thank you again for the link Deb}, was just perfect for practicing dialing 911.
The inspiration for our unit actually came from this adorable little book that we are currently reviewing! Look Left, Look Right, Look Left Again by Ginger Pate fit in perfectly with our safety lesson. Check back for the review soon!
Signs in Our World was a great book for learning what the signs mean! Even I found a few that I had never seen!
We did not read these as a group, but the kids have been reading them to themselves. Even Charger found out last week that he could read them all by himself. He was so pleased!
So here is what we did with the little signs :). We paired them our play rug.
Lots of sign reading and practicing of 'look left, look right, look left again.' They played together for over an hour :).
Then Charger read some of the safety books to Mini Cooper. LOVE!!
Tomorrow Mustang and I get to take a field trip all by ourselves! I can't wait!! I hope you are having a great school week!
God Bless,
Lisa

Science Sunday: Discovering Fingerprints

During our police unit, we learned about fingerprints. Our BJU curriculum suggested we learn about how a detective can lift fingerprints, but I did not have all the supplies on hand. So, I thought we would simply learn about fingerprints themselves.
I often have to remind myself that science lessons that seem easy and mundane to me (we aren't mixing things, cutting up things, or blowing things up) are still very exciting to my little ones who had no idea your fingers had a pattern on their tips-and they are the only ones in the world with those prints!
Using a great little printable I found on homeschoolshare.com, Mustang and Charger made matchbooks of their fingerprints.
Then we used our magnifying glasses to see if our prints had a Loop pattern, Whorl pattern, or an Arch pattern. It was quite difficult to tell with our quality of prints, but the kids had fun trying.
The printable can be found here:

Weekly Wrap Up: Police Unit
Our unit over the last few weeks has been about Police Men and women. I am glad to say we are finally done!! Here is a recap of the things we did for our unit.
Bible:
We used the Memory Verse from 2 Teaching Mommies, Psalm 16:1. They made a nice printable with the verse on it.
We sang the song 'Stop and Let me Tell You.' I tried and tried but could not find an author for this song. I found a very similar one, but not the song I remembered from my childhood. I did type up a song sheet which can be downloaded here.
Reading/Phonics/Language:

We read a few different books, but this is the only one worth highlighting. Detective LaRue Letters from the Investigation by Mark Teague. It is more of a detective book then a police book, but I think it all goes together.

Following our BJU curriculum, I made a matching alphabet set. The hats have uppercase letters and the badges have lowercase. It took me a long time to make, and I wish I would have found the matching uppercase/lowercase in Jolanthe's (Homeschool Creations) Police Lapbook pack before I did all the work!

Our unit before this one was about firemen, so I made a review game. Here, Mustang is sorting things that firemen use and things that policemen use. I put stars on the back for self-checking. The game can be downloaded here

Charger practiced his writing by helping the policemen catch the robbers. This is from the People who Keep us Safe pack from 2Teaching Mommies.
Math:

Charger worked on the police count and clip cards I made for him. They can be downloaded here.

Mustang worked on the count and color strips I made. They can be downloaded here.

Mustang worked on patterns from the Homeschool Creations Policeman Pack. I'll be honest that she really didnt need work on patterns, but she LOVES doing them for some reason. So I knew she would like these.

She reviewed letters N,I,S,& T with this color by letter policeman I made. It can be downloaded here. Excuse the chips...it was snack time :).
Art:
I saw this cute post on Counting Coconuts and our lesson plans suggested something similar, so I thought we'd give finger print animals a try. It didnt go as planned, but we did have fun!

Mini Cooper really just wanted to play with the markers.

Charger wanted to cover the paper in finger prints without markings.

And Mustang loved the idea, but wanted to do it all herself. She came up with some cute stuff!

This is a butterfly.

And these were sunglasses!!
PE:

We played Red Light, Green Light. Fun was had by all!

Police Unit Count and Color Game-Free Printable
Continuing with our Policeman/Safety unit, I have another printable to share.

My original goal was to make a worksheet, but I'm new to designing and it did not go as planned lol! The result wasn't what I had in mind, but I like how it turned out.

There are 5 different strips, with a number at the beginning of each one. I cut apart the strips, laminated them and included a few markers.

Mustang used a baby wipe to wipe the cards clean when she was done with each one.
This game includes cards 1-5. The count and color cards can be downloaded, free, here.
I made this game as a supplement to BJU Kindergarten Beginnings curriculum lessons 11-15.
Enjoy & God Bless!

Police Count and Clip Game-Free Printable
We've just about finished up our police safety unit. I found a lot of great games and other printables online and made a few to fill in the gaps that I needed. I'll be sharing them with you this week.

Today I have for you a count and clip game. It is similar to others I've seen online, but with a police theme.

The object of the game it to count the pictures and clip the number of objects with a close pin.

I like to add a sticker to the back for self checking.
This set includes numbers 1-10. It worked well as new work for Charger who is 3 1/2 and review work for Mustang who is 5. If you are using Bob Jones Kindergarten Beginnings this would be a great supplement to lessons 11-15.
The entire set can be downloaded (free) here.
