Montessori Science: Human Baby Unit

Thanks to Just Montessori we have been doing some fun stuff in our science area.  One unit we did was about human babies.  Now, at first I thought the kids might be a little young for learning about all the parts of a uterus and growing baby.  Then I realized, um, why would they want to learn about other animals if they don't know about themselves?  So we did the unit!  The kids really liked it!

We read the book How You Were Born by Joanna Cole.  This is a wonderful book!  Yes, I might have skipped a couple pages about how the baby *actually* comes out, but otherwise, it's wonderful!

Next, we ordered fetus cards to show how a baby grows.  I made these using images I found on the web.

Then, Mustang and Charger made parts of a fetus books.  They highlighted the uterus, placenta, baby, amniotic sac, amniotic fluid, umbilical cord, and cervix.

We made family trees to show how a baby becomes part of a family.

The tree is from the Teaching Resource Center.    The people are from Kidssoup (a freebie from them!).

Charger's was too funny, he decided to draw a tree house on the tree and also decided he needed two dads.  Um, yeah okay!

We finished up by making self 'portraits' using people from Hobby Lobby.

Thanks for stopping by and God Bless!!

I really like this presentation! I'm going to have to think more about doing this with my students.

This is great! We have a "new" baby (5 months) and our 5 year old suddenly has questions. Great book choice!

What a great idea for a unit study ... especially when you had a baby recently! Thanks so much for linking up with Montessori Monday. I featured your post at the Living Montessori Now Facebook page and pinned it to my Human Body Unit Study Pinterest board at http://pinterest.com/debchitwood/human-body-unit-study/

Great idea! Where did you find those growing fetus cards? We are having a new baby in 4 weeks and my 3.5 year old keeps asking lots of questions like what's he doing inside and when and how he's going to come out and how did he get there (lol). I showed her a colourful pictures from "Pregnant body" book but those cards you used look good and the idea to trace around placenta, uterus, ambilical corrd, etc. is great!

I've got a couple of books to cover that topic I'm going to be going over with my kids soon. I alternate between looking forward to it and dreading it.

This is a great post! We have a DVD by Answers in Genesis - Fearfully and Wonderfully Made! It is a lecture for older schooled children. It is very well done and covers some amazing things like how are eyelids are perfectly formed at a certain time.
