Ordinal Numbers-Montessori Style

A recent lesson was on ordinal numbers through 10th place. Googling the idea, I found a great game that was first presented on Montessori in Mars and then again on Adventures of Bear. I thought the game looked perfect for our needs, so I printed it out.

To start, I downloaded this awesome barn from McGuire Zone. Hint-when printing choose the print view option and make sure that the large part of the barn isnt in the picture so you dont have to print that part so many times! I printed on card stock and then glued the barn doors to another piece of card stock. I used an exacto knife to open the doors-its really hard otherwise! I colored clouds and grass, but that's not required :).



I pulled out the animals from our MacMillan Farm Animals Math Manipulatives. We received them as an amazing hand-me down and they are no longer available, but they are almost exactly like the Learning Resources Friendly Farm Counters.



I typed out ordinal numbers 1st-10th and glued one above each door.





I typed out instruction cards that said where to put each animal-for example put the yellow horse in the 10th door. Each child would read a card (or listen to me read it) and then follow the instructions.




Even Mini Cooper wanted to read her cards-it was very funny!




The children all really enjoyed this work, and did a great job of helping one another.

I left this out on the shelves for awhile and Mini Cooper, especially, has taken it off the shelf a lot. She doesnt understand the ordinal numbers, but it is a great chance to learn 'in and out' concepts as well. And, I have to admit its one of my favorites, too! The little animals are too darn cute lol.

Weekly Wrap Up-Letter N

We had a very uneventful week. My favorite! Daddy was gone most of the time planting, and we had very few outside commitments, so we got a lot done!! Yay!!

Phonics/Reading:

Letter N was introduced in our BJU curriculum along with site words here and is. Mustang also learned about the 'in' word family with previously learned letters t and s, so we have tin, sin, and in. We also learned about periods.



She worked on the following worksheets:

She also worked on a homemade tracer/copy work page to practice it is and here (before we introduced n).

For Preschool, we pulled out the N phonics box.


Nest, number nine, note, nickle, notebook, and necklace. It used to have a needle...not sure where it went! Thank God it was plastic!



N is for numbers-he put number stickers on lowercase n.



He 'wrote' N with the do-a-dots from Confessions of a Homeschooler. He had been doing the letter tracers with Mustang, but they seemed to hard for him, so we took a step back.

Located N's-from PreKinders,



and matched N puzzles from Alphabet Avenue.



He also built words with our vintage game.

Math

Again following our Bob Jones Curriculum, we learned (or really reviewed for Mustang) numbers 6, 0, pictographs, and ordinal numbers first-fifth.

To learn about ordinal numbers, Mustang did a few worksheets from Kids Learning Station. She looks so excited doesnt she?

Printable Preschool Ordinal Numbers Game

Today's lesson was on ordinal numbers. I received our curriculum free, so I didnt receive any of the cool worktext papers, etc., and am often finding things online to use. I couldnt find anything online that did quite what I wanted to see, so I made my own. Though of course I found on after!



I found these cute {copy write free} little people from Microsoft. I simply printed them off and glued them to half a file folder to get the length.



Then I printed these cute ribbons, also from Microsoft. I just wrote the ordinal numbers on them.



The object was to match the ordinal number with the correct child. I added Velcro circles to make the ribbons stick.



I found that even though this was 'Mustangs lesson' it was something she had already mastered. Charger, on the other hand is just beginning to grasp it. He worked on the game, and wanted to match the colors at first. Eventually, he got it with a little help.

I did go ahead and upload my game pieces in case you want to recreate it. Its nothing special, but it may save you time in the future.
