Montessori Inspired Safety Day

I'm not a big 'theme day' kinda person, but today we had one.  Our theme was safety-mostly traffic safety.  We had a lot of fun!

Here's a quick look at some of our activities.

We practiced our skip counting using printables from City Teacher Goes Country.  Thank you Deb @ Living Montessori now for the printable tip!  Charger's Lego Policeman helped us as we counted by jumping from number to number :).

The kids also made up their own game.

I got these great printables for free from 123 Homeschool 4 Me. The idea was to cut them out and paste them on the right shape...but I had other ideas.  :)

These are the pages that were supposed to be glued, we just read them and sorted shapes instead.

I found this address printable on Homeschool Share.  We did a *little* copy work.  Mustang and Charger did this, the little girls did not.

This handy printable from I Can Teach My Child {thank you again for the link Deb}, was just perfect for practicing dialing 911.

The inspiration for our unit actually came from this adorable little book that we are currently reviewing!  Look Left, Look Right, Look Left Again by Ginger Pate fit in perfectly with our safety lesson.  Check back for the review soon!

Signs in Our World was a great book for learning what the signs mean!  Even I found a few that I had never seen!

We did not read these as a group, but the kids have been reading them to themselves.  Even Charger found out last week that he could read them all by himself.  He was so pleased!

So here is what we did with the little signs :).  We paired them our play rug.

Lots of sign reading and practicing of 'look left, look right, look left again.'  They played together for over an hour :).

Then Charger read some of the safety books to Mini Cooper.  LOVE!!

Tomorrow Mustang and I get to take a field trip all by ourselves!  I can't wait!!  I hope you are having a great school week!

Science Sunday-Playing With Fire

Okay, so no, we didnt really play with fire lol. But we did learn about fire. This experiment was from our BJU Kindergarten book. The point was to learn what causes a fire to go out.

The first part of the experiment was to learn that fire needs fuel to burn. The book suggested we watch a candle burn out-um yeah okay, even a small candle would not hold our attention. So, I took matters into my own hands and used a paper towel. It wouldnt burn!! It would burn for a few seconds and then burn out. Epic fail! I am quite sure the kids didnt understand this part of the experiment.



So on to part two. We (er um I) lit a candle.



Then, we took away its air by placing a jar over the candle-do you see their excitement? Uh huh.



We watched until the candle went out-it didnt take long at all.



For last experiment, we took away the candle's heat and poured water on it.

Then I found out why they had been sitting so quietly. They thought my ideas were all well and good, but they wanted to BLOW OUT the candle! So, we took turns blowing the candle out.





Even Mini tried, but wouldnt get close enough to the candle so we helped her.

All in all, I would the experiment was a success. Not sure exactly what they took away from it, but I thought it provided a good intro into the properties of fire.

Weekly Wrap Up-Fire Safety Week

Yesterday we wrapped up our unit on fire safety. I put out certain learning trays or have certain projects with one of my children in mind, but they usually each try them.


Sensorial



Our Melissa and Doug fireman puzzle. Mini Cooper loved it, but couldnt put the pieces back in their place. This was best for Charger-but I didnt get pics of him.



Putting buttons in an ice cube tray-in a pattern. Mustang loved this one and did it quickly. Charger wouldnt try it. And Mini Cooper was so cute with it.



The first time she tried it, she put just a couple buttons in and quit. She tried every few days and got a few more.



Yesterday-with just a little prompting-she finally filled all the holes. She was quite pleased!

Language


Charger matched shadow pictures from the awesome fireman pack at Homeschool Creations.



I made this activity for Charger thinking it would be a hit, and I was wrong.


The goal was to look in the 'fire' and pull out a fireman.


Then, look to see what letter was on him and match him to the letter on the poster.

He did NOT like looking for the firemen. So, he poured out whole bin and took just the firemen (somehow losing 2 in the process) and matched them. He also got hung up on the fact that he didnt have E & F.



He really wanted his picture taken, though!




Mini Cooper enjoyed the fire bin!

Math



I printed this fireman counting mat from Lawteedah's Fireman Unit and combined it with our giant dice and dalmation erasers. Mustang loved this one-anything that includes our mini erasers is her favorite!




Mustang and Charger both enjoyed counting dalmation spots from the Homeschool Creations fireman pack.

I'm A Firefighter (okay). In the back of the book there are some worksheets-which Mustang and Charger worked on. One was about what they wanted to be when they grew up-they both want to be a mommy (maybe our next unit will be on boys and girls lol).

Art





The kids practiced their gluing with these foam firetrucks I found at Hobby Lobby for 1.00.







We painted with red and yellow to make orange fire! This was Mini Cooper's first time painting and she was so pleased. I should have gotten a picture of the end results-the pictures got pretty crazy lol!
