Weekly Wrap Up: Fall and Halloween

Here are some glimpses from inside our classroom this week:

A is for Apple Preschool and Kindergarten Free Printable Pack!

I know there are many printable packs out there with apples, but I wanted to add my offerings into the mix.  I also have no idea when I will get a chance to photograph my own children using the pack.  So, in order to get these out to you at a time you might actually use them, I am only posting my pack-not the pack in use :).

My A is for Apple pack includes:

*Lowercase and Uppercase sorting mats*

*Apple matching cards-can be printed twice for a matching game OR 

put the apples in order from whole to eaten!*

*A word family game-put the apples in their word family bin.  Set includes word families it, in, et, en, at, and an, along with the words at, sat, hat, bat, in, sin, tin, an, tan, set, net, wet, it, hit, bit, sit, ten, hen, and ben.*

*10 Apples Up on Top cards-we have been reading this book by Theo LeSieg, so I made up cards and counters to go with the story.  I tried to model my cards after the pictures in the book.  We used red and green craft gems as our counters, or you could use red and or green pom poms.*

*Fall/Apple themed cards that could be used for spelling cards, 3 part cards, matching cards, or whatever you would like.  Set includes cards that say apple, butterfly, carmel apple, core, flower, jug, owl, pie, tree, and worm.*

Weekly Wrap Up: Kindergarten Edition Letters T & I

Reading



On Monday of this week, Mustang picked up our Dick and Jane Treasury and informed me she was going to read the ENTIRE book. And, she did. We have been reading this book on and off for awhile, and she knew most of the words. She worked to sound out the words she didnt know-or had me tell her when she couldnt figure it out. She read for about 2 hours straight. My DH even suggested she take a break at one point and she wouldnt hear of it! She was so excited to reach the end. She told me her next goal is to read ALL the books on our shelves. Lets hope not in one day :).

Phonics & and handwriting:
Mustang worked on her BJU K5 Beginnings curriculum. We focused on letters i and t, and the sight word it (really a review for her). We do not have the worktext for BJU (the curriculum was free to us!) so I supplemented with worksheets:

Letter tracers from Confessions of a Homeschooler.

Color by letter: Uppercase and lowercase T from education.com.

Color by letter: Uppercase and lowercase I from education.com.

I also made our own tracer pages to work on the sight word it from Kid Zone.



She also found the letters I and T using this letter hunt sheet from Confessions of a Homeschooler.

Math:

In our BJU K5 math, we have been studying numbers 1-5. This is NOT new to Mustang, but we have been focusing on the dot patterns. We also picked up-free at our homechool swap-the teacher's guide for Saxon K5 math. Its not terribly useful without the worktext, but it has the cutest songs to teach how to write your numbers. This is something Mustang is still working on, so it is a welcome addition. She LOVES to sing.



She practiced writing her numbers using the number tracers from Confessions of a Homeschooler (we love her work!).



Mustang also worked on her number booklet from BJU. I gave her foam stickers to cover the shapes in her book.




To review her numbers-I made the count and clip cards (1-5 only) from Confessions of a Homeschooler. I added stars on the back for self checking.


This post from My Montessori Journey reminded me of some things I had still packed away.



The object of this Easter Springtime tray is to take and egg card and a basket. Then, one would fill with basket with the number on the egg. My Montessori Journey used a chicken card, but its from Kidsoup-which is a pay site and I am not a member. I did find these pretty eggs from-you guessed it-Confessions of a Homeschooler in her Easter pack.




I added star stickers for self checking.



What Mustang wanted to do was to separate them all by color. She is very stubborn lately, and is trying to figure out her boundaries! My usual focus is not whether or not she knows the material, its whether or not she wants to follow directions.




She made a graph using this cute animal cut out I found at education.com.

Other stuff:






Mustang finally started her Kumon Book of Pasting. It went pretty well. I am hoping that this will help her learn to cut on the lines better.



During 'free time' she almost always chooses some sort of art. She loves to draw and would do it all day if I let her!

I decided to do three separate wrap up posts this week, but fell asleep writing this one. Not sure if I'll get the others done or not! It's 80 degrees outside, so I think we will be going out to play. Hope you have a great weekend! God Bless!

Science Sunday-Playing With Fire

Okay, so no, we didnt really play with fire lol. But we did learn about fire. This experiment was from our BJU Kindergarten book. The point was to learn what causes a fire to go out.

The first part of the experiment was to learn that fire needs fuel to burn. The book suggested we watch a candle burn out-um yeah okay, even a small candle would not hold our attention. So, I took matters into my own hands and used a paper towel. It wouldnt burn!! It would burn for a few seconds and then burn out. Epic fail! I am quite sure the kids didnt understand this part of the experiment.



So on to part two. We (er um I) lit a candle.



Then, we took away its air by placing a jar over the candle-do you see their excitement? Uh huh.



We watched until the candle went out-it didnt take long at all.



For last experiment, we took away the candle's heat and poured water on it.

Then I found out why they had been sitting so quietly. They thought my ideas were all well and good, but they wanted to BLOW OUT the candle! So, we took turns blowing the candle out.





Even Mini tried, but wouldnt get close enough to the candle so we helped her.

All in all, I would the experiment was a success. Not sure exactly what they took away from it, but I thought it provided a good intro into the properties of fire.
